Commercial classification covers any app that monetizes, serves business users, or operates at volume Reddit considers beyond the free threshold. Reddit decides classification during review, not at developer signup.
Authenticated non-commercial apps receive 100 queries per minute per OAuth client ID. That ceiling has held since July 1, 2023. Unauthenticated requests cap at 10 queries per minute.
The free path covers reading posts, comments, subreddit metadata, and submitting moderator actions. It does not cover commercial brand monitoring, model training on Reddit content, or redistribution of raw data. Those use cases route to the paid commercial path regardless of actual call volume.

Commercial applications require a separate review with business justification, expected subreddits, and projected call volume. The process typically runs two to four weeks. Approval is not guaranteed.
