Pull Google News Top News and Wikipedia Trending in one Trends MCP account, then join shortened headlines against article titles, google news indexes, and search follow-ups.
Live data as of 2026-08-27
A Google News versus Wikipedia Trending comparison on Trends MCP is two get_top_trends calls: type Google News Top News and type Wikipedia Trending. From the August 27, 2026 pull, both boards stamped 2026-08-27T14:01:41 UTC. News returned 38 headlines at limit 50, then count 0 at offset 38. Wikipedia returned 50 rows at offsets 0, 50, 100, and 150, filling ranks 1 through 200, then count 0 at offset 200. News rank 1 was the Nepal flash floods headline. Wikipedia rank 1 was Dolly Parton. Nepal also sat at Wikipedia rank 38 as 2026 Nepal floods and rank 66 as Nepal. Same-stamp 1d rank_change returned count 1 on News and count 42 on Wikipedia. Free tier access is 100 requests per month.
From the Trends MCP scan of August 27, 2026, Google News Top News and Wikipedia Trending both stamped 2026-08-27T14:01:41 UTC, News closed at 38 headlines, and Wikipedia filled 200, so a default limit 25 join misses News ranks 26 through 38 and never sees that Wikipedia keeps paging.

ChatGPT sat at Wikipedia rank 42 and App Store Top Free rank 1, and still missed News 38. Google Trends rank 1 matched Wikipedia rank 1 as dolly parton. Google Trends rank 3 matched News rank 1 as nepal.
The Google News Top News API page still describes a July 30, 2026 scan with a Trump and Iran headline at rank 1. This pull closed at 38 with Nepal at rank 1. Length 38 held. The leaderboard did not.
Two get_top_trends calls against the same Trends MCP key return Google News Top News and Wikipedia Trending as separate ranked lists, and REST mode get_top_trends bills each type and each page as its own request, so confirming News at offset 38 plus paginating Wikipedia through offset 200 is six requests before any get_growth follow-up.
{"mode": "get_top_trends", "type": "Google News Top News", "limit": 50, "offset": 0}
{"mode": "get_top_trends", "type": "Wikipedia Trending", "limit": 50, "offset": 0}
MCP clients send the same fields on get_top_trends. Type strings are exact: Google News Top News is correct; Google News RSS is not a valid Trends MCP type. Wikipedia Trending is the live pageview board, not the wikipedia keyword source on get_growth. Offset and limit behavior for both feeds is on get_top_trends pagination. For the Google Trends sibling, see Google News vs Google Trends. The current-rank Wikipedia board is documented on the Wikipedia Trending API page.
Headline strings embed publisher names and punctuation. Article titles do not. A production join needs an alias table, not lowercase equality on the raw row.
Exact string matching on News 38 versus Wikipedia 200 returned zero shared rows, and topic joins still recovered Nepal, Dolly Parton, Lindsay Clancy, Miley Cyrus, and John Ratcliffe, so a desk that only diffs identical strings will report an empty overlap on a day when both boards are covering the same stories.

wikipedia source get_growth for 2026 Nepal floods returned no_data on this run, even though that title sat at live rank 38. Live rank is not a get_growth guarantee. google search for nepal sat at 21.0 on 2026-08-22, down 4.55% over 7 days from 22.0. google news for nepal sat at 26.0, down 29.73% over 7 days from 37.0 and up 116.67% over 30 days from 12.0. Dolly Parton on google search sat at 1.0, flat over 7 days; the 30D percent was omitted because baseline_value was 0.0. Tim Curry on google search sat at 0.0 on both 7D and 30D. Lindsay Clancy on google news sat at 100.0, up 49.25% over 7 days from 67.0, with a low-quality warning that the series is over 90% zeros. Lunar eclipse august 2026 on google search sat at 27.0, down 73.0% over 7 days from 100.0 and up 1250.0% over 30 days from 2.0. Nvidia on google news sat at 86.0, down 14.0% over 7 days from 100.0 and up 514.29% over 30 days from 14.0. Yayoi Kusama on google search sat at 4.0, flat over 7 days. ChatGPT on google search sat at 78.0, up 4.0% over 7 days from 75.0.
A newsroom loop that trusts Wikipedia pageview leaders as a proxy for Google News will miss the lunar eclipse headline at News rank 31 and the Nvidia earnings headline at rank 15. The reverse proxy misses Tim Curry at Wikipedia rank 2 and ChatGPT at rank 42.
sort rank_change on the same 14:01 stamp, against the same 2026-08-27T02:01:32 UTC baseline, returned count 1 on Google News Top News and count 42 on Wikipedia Trending, so a 1d climber pull is not interchangeable across a headline board and a pageview board even when both feeds are daily.
The single News climber was the Ottumwa Pizza Ranch measles headline at rank 37, prev_rank 38, rank_change 1. Wikipedia 1d was led by 2026-27 UEFA Europa League at rank 78, prev_rank 179, rank_change 101, then UEFA Champions League at rank 99, prev_rank 190, rank_change 91, then Onam at rank 35, prev_rank 125, rank_change 90. Dolly Parton related titles also climbed: Steel Magnolias +68, Jolene +42, Rockstar (Dolly Parton album) +37, Miley Cyrus +34. News 7d and 30d rank_change both returned count 0 with complete-turnover notes versus 2026-08-21T02:01:37 UTC and 2026-07-29T02:01:36 UTC. Headline boards turn over. Wikipedia titles can persist long enough to compute a climb.
Default sort rank still answers who is on the board now. rank_change answers who moved. On this stamp those are different questions, and they disagree across the two feeds.
