Canada tariffs is the split signal. News rank 1 sits next to Trends rank 36 for the short query canada, while google news index 51.0 on 2026-08-22 is a stronger 7-day print than google search 17.0. lindsay clancy 30D on google news printed 999999% against a 0.0 baseline; quote index 100.0 and the 7D +49.25% instead. For the News board alone, see the Google News Top News API.

Exact API calls for both live boards

Two get_top_trends calls cover the snapshot: type Google News Top News for headlines and type Google Trends for rising queries, each counting as one request against the monthly quota on the August 25, 2026 pull, with News needing limit 50 because default 25 hides ranks 26 through 38 and Trends still paging at offset 50.

Join on shortened topic tokens, not raw headlines. "How U.S.-Canada Tariff Negotiations Turned Into an All-Out Trade War - The New York Times" on News rank 1 and keyword Canada tariffs on source google news are a join. "lunar eclipse august 2026" on Trends rank 16 is a google search follow-up (index 8.0 on 2026-08-22), not a publisher byline. Offset details for feeds that page past 50 live on get_top_trends offset and limit.

Same-story joins that default limit 25 misses

Default limit 25 on Google News Top News would have stopped at Spider-Man: Brand New Day at rank 24 and dropped lunar eclipse at 31, Reggie Watts at 26, and RFK Jr. vaccine categories at 38, which is enough to mis-label eclipse as search-only when Trends already had it at rank 16.

Lunar eclipse is the clean miss. Trends already listed lunar eclipse august 2026 at rank 16 inside the first 25. News listed the California near-total eclipse at rank 31. google search sat at 8.0 on 2026-08-22, down 33.33% over 7 days from 12.0, yet up 300.0% over 14 days from 2.0 and up 700.0% over 30 days from 1.0. youtube sat at 3.0, down 50.0% over 7 days from 6.0. A News pull at default 25 would have reported "eclipse is search-only." It was not.

Reggie Watts needs paging on both sides. News rank 26 (festivals remove comedian) is past default 25. Trends rank 69 appeared only on the offset 50 page. Two limit 25 calls would have reported zero overlap for a story that sat on both boards after page two. For the Trends board alone, see the Google Trends trending now API.

Growth follow-ups on overlapping topics

Growth follow-ups on the same pull used 261 weekly points ending 2026-08-22, and google news versus google search can move in opposite directions on the same token, so quote both indexes rather than picking the larger percent as if it were a single demand series.

supreme court search sat at 26.0, down 7.14% over 7 days from 28.0, down 16.13% over 14 days, and down 39.53% over 30 days from 43.0. google news for the same keyword sat at 16.0, flat over 7 days, up 100.0% over 14 days from 8.0, and up 220.0% over 30 days from 5.0. The live News headline is a mail-ballot ruling; the keyword series is a broader court token. X (Twitter) Trending listed Supreme Court at rank 14 and SCOTUS at rank 19 on the same stamp, a third board that still needs its own type string.

starbucks search sat at 55.0 with about 58,500,000 estimated volume, up 10.0% over 7 days. google news sat at 100.0, up 21.95% over 7 days from 82.0, up 122.22% over 14 days from 45.0, and up 284.62% over 30 days from 26.0. The News row is a Pumpkin Spice Latte tasting piece; the Trends row is starbucks fall menu 2026. Estimated volume on google search is derived from the 0-100 index on this source, not an independent count. For keyword-level news series, see the Google News keyword trends API.

Stories that sit on only one board

cyberleek led Google Trends at rank 1 and never appeared in the 38 News headlines, a reminder that the search board is not a headline desk: bitcoin price sat at Trends rank 2 with google search 26.0 (up 36.84% over 7 days from 19.0) and also missed News.

insidious sat at Trends ranks 10 and 20 with google search 60.0, up 233.33% over 7 days from 18.0, up 328.57% over 14 days, and up 900.0% over 30 days from 6.0, still absent from News.

Nvidia sat at News rank 17 and missed Trends top 50. google news for nvidia sat at 93.0, down 7.0% over 7 days from 100.0, up 82.35% over 14 days from 51.0, and up 520.0% over 30 days from 15.0. A 7-day drop from a 100.0 ceiling is not a quiet tape; the 14D and 30D windows still show a large climb. iPhone 18 pro max release date sat at Trends rank 48. News instead carried iPad Mini at 19 and AirPods 5 at 20, an Apple cluster that does not share a query string.

This cut is headlines versus rising queries on one stamp. Wikipedia Trending is a separate board and a separate join.

Limits of a headline-to-query join

Headlines include publisher names and verbs while Trends rows are short queries, so a naive string equals on this stamp returned zero matches and joins have to shorten a mail-ballot ruling headline to supreme court or mail ballots before the second call.

lindsay clancy carried a low-quality warning on both google search and google news: the underlying signal is over 90% zero values. The 7D prints (search +16.28% to 100.0, news +49.25% to 100.0) are usable as a peak. The 30D news print of 999999% from a 0.0 baseline is not. Quote the index.

News stopped at 38. Trends continued through at least rank 75 on this pull. Each type plus each page counts as a request. Two boards at limit 50 cost two requests; adding Trends offset 50 costs a third. The free plan includes 100 requests per month across every type. Check current pricing before quoting a plan for production volume.

Common questions

Each get_top_trends call takes one type, so call Google News Top News once and Google Trends once, then join shortened topics in code. Both feeds use the same auth header. On August 25, 2026 both boards stamped 2026-08-25T08:01:36 UTC. News returned 38 rows at limit 50. Trends returned 50 rows at limit 50.
String equals are rare because News returns full headlines with publisher names and Trends returns short queries. Topic joins on this stamp included Canada tariffs (News rank 1, Trends rank 36 canada), Supreme Court mail ballots (News rank 2, Trends ranks 14 and 37), Lindsay Clancy (News rank 4, Trends rank 18), Starbucks (News rank 18, Trends rank 33), and Target Halloween (News rank 23, Trends rank 30).
No. Google News Top News stopped at count 38, so ranks 26 through 38 exist only if limit is raised. Lunar eclipse sat at News rank 31 and Trends rank 16. Reggie Watts sat at News rank 26 and Trends rank 69. Offset 38 on News returned count 0.
Trends MCP free covers 100 requests per month across every source, including Google News Top News and Google Trends. Starter is $19 for 1,000 requests, Pro is $49 for 5,000, and Business is $199 for 25,000. Extra percent_growth windows inside one get_growth call still count as a single request.
