The best SerpApi alternative depends on the payload. Serper is the cheap Google JSON credit pack. SearchAPI and DataForSEO win high-volume SERP and Google Trends Explore scrapes. Bright Data sells a Google Trends SERP product, while its Google query docs say only the Trending now tab is supported. Trends MCP is the buy when an agent needs 12-month growth and live boards, not organic links. On 30 August 2026, SerpApi Starter was $25 per 1,000 monthly searches. Trends MCP Starter was $19 per 1,000 requests. Neither SKU is a drop-in for the other.
Which SerpApi alternative wins each job?
Serper wins prepaid Google JSON. SearchAPI wins a monthly SERP grid with a first-party OAuth MCP. DataForSEO wins the cheapest public Google Trends Explore task. Trends MCP wins ranked boards plus keyword growth. Nobody on this list is a first-party Google Cloud Trends key.
| Job | Winner checked 30 August 2026 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid Google organic JSON, no monthly reset | Serper Ultimate | $3,750 for 12.5 million credits, $0.30 per 1,000, 300 queries per second |
| Monthly SERP with Legal Protection from Production | SearchAPI Production | $100 per month for 35,000 searches, $3 per 1,000, 99.9% SLA |
| Google Trends Explore at the lowest public task price | DataForSEO Standard queue | $0.0027 per task, up to 5 keywords, $50 minimum deposit |
Hosted MCP search with the key in the URL path | SerpApi | https://mcp.serpapi.com/YOUR_SERPAPI_API_KEY/mcp, default engine google_light |
| OAuth MCP without putting a key in the URL | SearchAPI | https://www.searchapi.io/mcp; token auth uses X-MCP-Token, not Authorization |
| Live Google / TikTok / Amazon / Reddit boards plus growth presets | Trends MCP | Three tools; default get_top_trends limit 25, max 200 |
| Official consistently scaled Google series, 1800-day window | Google Trends API alpha | Application-gated; no public price, quota, or self-serve key |
SerpApi still wins engine breadth on a single monthly invoice: Google Trends (engine=google_trends, max 5 queries on TIMESERIES), a separate Trending Now engine, plus the hosted MCP search tool. A team that already burns that grid for flights, shopping, or Legal Shield from Production ($150 per month, 15,000 searches) should not rip it out for a trend board.
Trends MCP does not return title/link/snippet rows. The matching Cursor landing page is the MCP server for Cursor guide.
What does a SerpApi alternative cost on 30 August 2026?
Public cards, checked the same day. Failed calls are free on every vendor below unless that vendor's custom-header exception applies.
Serper (serper.dev, accessed 30 August 2026) is prepaid, not a monthly subscription. Credits last 6 months. Tax extra. Homepage free trial: 2,500 queries, no card.
| Pack | Price | Credits | Per 1,000 | Queries per second |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial | $0 | 2,500 | $0 | not a named pack limit |

Serper's FAQ states typical latency of 1 to 2 seconds, 2 to 4 seconds on retry, and no cache. Refund: full refund within 7 days of the initial credit purchase unless more than 20% of credits are used. Homepage copy still says "up to 10 times cheaper" than SerpApi. Serper Starter $1.00 per 1,000 versus SerpApi Starter $25.00 is 25 times. Quote both.
SerpApi (serpapi.com/pricing, accessed 30 August 2026) is month-to-month in USD. Only successful searches count. Cache expires after 1 hour; cached searches are free. Throughput is guaranteed successful searches per hour. Refund: full refund within 7 days of subscribe unless more than 20% of searches are used. Speed modes multiply the base price: Best Effort 1x, Ludicrous Speed 2x, Ludicrous Speed Max 4x.
| Plan | Price | Searches / month | Throughput / hour | Legal Shield |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 250 | 50 | No |

SearchAPI (searchapi.io/pricing, accessed 30 August 2026) bills successful HTTP 200 searches only. Sign-up: 100 free requests, no card. Hourly cap: 20% of the plan's credits. The page shows Regular / High Volume and Standard / Enhanced speed toggles. This run quotes the Regular Standard-speed cards only; a separate Enhanced dollar grid was not published as distinct numbers on that fetch.
| Plan | Price | Searches | Per 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer | $40 / mo | 10,000 | $4 |
| Production | $100 / mo | 35,000 | $3 |
| Scale | $500 / mo | 250,000 | $2 |
| Octo 1M | $1,500 / mo | 1,000,000 | $1.50 |
Production and above include a Legal Protection Guarantee, documented as up to $2 million in coverage. Developer lists a 99.9% SLA and does not list that legal card.
DataForSEO Google Trends (dataforseo.com/pricing/keywords-data/google-trends, accessed 30 August 2026): Standard $0.0027 per task, up to 45 minutes. Live $0.011, about 32 seconds. Up to 5 keywords per task. $50 minimum payment. Docs: 2,000 calls per minute.

Trends MCP (www.trendsmcp.ai/pricing, accessed 30 August 2026). pricing.md table:
| Plan | Monthly requests | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 100 | $0 |
| Starter | 1,000 | $19 / mo |
| Pro | 5,000 | $49 / mo |
| Business | 25,000 | $199 / mo |
Annual billing saves 20%. HTML yearly: Starter $16 / $192, Pro $39 ($468), Business $159 ($1,910), copy "2 months free." Keyword alerts: Pro 50, Business 250. Failed calls are free. HTML Free: top 10 trends, 12 months, 24-hour delay. Paid: all trends, full history, real-time. HTML also markets "35+ data sources." get_growth is one source plus keyword. get_top_trends is one feed type per MCP call, counted per page.
The HTML paid-plan fine print says "Card charged after day 7." The FAQ says the card is collected at checkout but not charged until day 8. Cite both. The same HTML fetch printed 9,534,329 API calls served.
How do Cursor MCP configs differ across vendors?
SerpApi puts the key in the path. SearchAPI tells teams not to. Trends MCP uses a Bearer header on a different host than Claude.ai OAuth.
SerpApi hosted MCP (serpapi.com/mcp, accessed 30 August 2026). One main tool, search. Default engine google_light. Markdown output is documented as cutting token usage by 50% on average.
{
"mcpServers": {
"serpapi": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp.serpapi.com/YOUR_SERPAPI_API_KEY/mcp"
}
}
}
Auth can also be Authorization: Bearer. Self-host clones github.com/serpapi/serpapi-mcp.
SearchAPI MCP (searchapi.io/integrations/mcp, accessed 30 August 2026). OAuth URL is https://www.searchapi.io/mcp. Docs: do not put credentials in an MCP URL. Token auth uses header X-MCP-Token, not Authorization (reserved for OAuth). Limits: maximum 10 MCP integrations per account; each tool call counts as one API request.
{
"mcpServers": {
"searchapi": {
"url": "https://www.searchapi.io/mcp"
}
}
}
Serper's homepage playground on this fetch listed Search, Images, News, Maps, Places, Videos, Shopping, Scholar, Patents, and Autocomplete. Google-only depth. No first-party MCP install block.
Trends MCP documents two hosts that are not interchangeable. Cursor uses Bearer on api.trendsmcp.ai. Claude.ai Connectors use OAuth on the www host. Cursor block from docs.md (30 August 2026):
{
"mcpServers": {
"trends-mcp": {
"url": "https://api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp",
"transport": "http",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
}
}
Paste into ~/.cursor/mcp.json (Windows: %USERPROFILE%\.cursor\mcp.json). Windsurf uses serverUrl instead of Cursor's url plus transport. REST is POST https://api.trendsmcp.ai/api. Three tools: get_time_series, get_growth (default ["12M"]), get_top_trends (type required on MCP).
Serper has no Trends type on that homepage list. For Google Trends inside Cursor without a SERP scrape, the dedicated page is Google Trends MCP for Cursor. A side-by-side of the two Trends payloads is Trends MCP vs SerpApi Trends.
Does the alternative actually return Google Trends?
SerpApi scrapes Explore. SearchAPI scrapes Explore. DataForSEO bills Explore tasks. Bright Data's product page and its Google query docs do not agree. Trends MCP stores a series and a live board. Google's own alpha is a fourth path with no public SKU.
SerpApi Google Trends API (serpapi.com/google-trends-api, accessed 30 August 2026): engine=google_trends plus q. TIMESERIES (default) and compared-breakdown-by-region accept up to 5 comma-separated queries. Other data_type values accept 1 query. Property filter gprop can be images, news, froogle (Shopping), or youtube. Cache is 1 hour.
SearchAPI Google Trends (searchapi.io/docs/google-trends, accessed 30 August 2026): engine=google_trends plus data_type (TIMESERIES, GEO_MAP, RELATED_QUERIES, RELATED_TOPICS). TIMESERIES is limited to 5 queries. Same gprop set including froogle.
DataForSEO overview: Explore data for Google Search, Google News, Google Images, Google Shopping, and YouTube. Five keywords per request. Related topics and related queries require a single keyword.
Bright Data's Google Trends product page (accessed 30 August 2026) sells structured Trends data, JSON/HTML/Markdown, and names search terms, topics, latest stories, recently trending, and Year in search. The SERP Google query-parameters doc, same day, states that only the Trending now tab is supported, and that Explore and Home are not supported because they need login for full functionality. The same doc still documents brd_trends=timeseries,geo_map. Cite the split. Do not flatten the marketing page into "full Explore."
Trends MCP is not a scrape of trends.google.com HTML. docs.md on 30 August 2026 listed 15 keyword sources for get_time_series / get_growth and 24 named live feeds for get_top_trends, including the four by Category boards. The same day's data-sources.md listed those 15 keyword sources and only 20 live feeds, omitting every by Category board. llms.txt said "plus 21 live feeds." HTML pricing marketed "35+ data sources." The MCP get_growth schema still lists python; the docs.md keyword table does not. Cite the split.
Default get_top_trends limit is 25, max 200. sort=rank_change with window of 1d, 3d, 7d, 14d, or 30d returns climbers versus a prior snapshot. MCP requires type per call. REST may omit type.
Google's official Trends API alpha (developers.google.com/search/apis/trends and the 24 July 2025 Search Central blog, both accessed 30 August 2026) is application-gated. Public facts: rolling 1800 days (~5 years), daily/weekly/monthly/yearly aggregation, region and sub-region (ISO 3166-2), data through 2 days ago, consistently scaled (not 0-100 per request). No public price, quota table, or self-serve key. The developers overview says the API can compare dozens of terms while the Trends UI allows eight. The announcement blog says the website offers comparisons of 5 terms. Those two Google pages disagree. Do not budget a dollar amount Google has not published.
When is staying on SerpApi the cheaper move?
Keep SerpApi when Legal Shield, a one-hour free cache, or a hosted search tool over multiple engines is the actual requirement. Switch when the invoice is paying for engines the team never calls.
Repeated identical engine=google_trends queries inside an hour are cheaper on SerpApi than on Serper, because Serper's FAQ says it does not cache and SerpApi's cache is free. Google organic JSON at 50,000 queries with a 6-month credit window is cheaper on Serper Starter ($50) than on SerpApi Developer ($75 for 5,000 monthly searches). Those are different units.
SearchAPI's 20% hourly cap matters for burst backfills. On Developer, 20% of 10,000 is 2,000 searches in one hour. SerpApi Starter guarantees 200 successful searches per hour. Serper Starter states 50 queries per second.
A common split is Serper or SearchAPI for grounding, plus Trends MCP for boards and get_growth. Two invoices, two JSON shapes. Serper credits will not return a get_top_trends row. A Trends MCP limit=10 Google Trends feed will not include People Also Ask.
Skip every vendor here if the need is Google's alpha with contractual access. Skip Trends MCP if the only output is organic position. Skip Serper if Bing or eBay is already on the roadmap. Skip Bright Data for Explore history until the Trending now versus Explore split is reconciled in writing.
FAQ
Is there a cheaper drop-in for every SerpApi engine?
No. Serper covers named Google types on its homepage, not Bing or eBay. Quote the engine the project actually calls. Trends MCP is three read-only trend tools, not a SERP parser. A "drop-in" that keeps flights, shopping, and Trends on one key is still SerpApi.
Can SearchAPI or SerpApi MCP replace Trends MCP in Cursor?
No. SearchAPI MCP is OAuth or X-MCP-Token against https://www.searchapi.io/mcp, with a 10-integration cap. SerpApi MCP is one search tool, key in the path, default google_light. Trends MCP is Bearer on api.trendsmcp.ai with get_time_series, get_growth, and get_top_trends.
How do DataForSEO's $0.0027 tasks compare to SerpApi Starter?
They are not the same unit. DataForSEO Standard queue is $0.0027 per Explore task (up to 5 keywords), $50 minimum deposit, up to 45 minutes. Live is $0.011 and about 32 seconds. SerpApi Starter is $25 per month for 1,000 successful searches at 200 per hour, with a 1-hour cache. At 1,000 Explore tasks in Standard queue, DataForSEO is $2.70 before the deposit floor.
Does Bright Data replace a Google Trends Explore API?
Not on the docs fetched 30 August 2026. The product page sells a Google Trends API. The Google query-parameters page says only the Trending now tab is supported and names Explore and Home as unsupported. Until Bright Data publishes one consistent surface, treat it as a Trending now / SERP buy, not an Explore replacement.
What does Trends MCP cost relative to SerpApi Starter?
Trends MCP Starter is $19 per 1,000 monthly requests. SerpApi Starter is $25 per 1,000 monthly searches. The cheaper row is not the better SERP. Trends MCP Free is 100 requests, top 10, 12 months, 24-hour delay, no card. SerpApi Free is 250 searches at 50 per hour. Buy Trends MCP for boards and growth. Keep SerpApi for organic JSON.
