Buffer still wins as a public MCP publisher. MCP is on every plan including Free, Cursor connects with a URL-only OAuth JSON at https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp, and create_post accepts shareNow. Later wins Instagram-led Social Sets on yearly cards at $18.75 / $37.50 / $82.50 a month, with no X in a Set. Publer wins a $5 Professional floor for one account. Metricool wins brand analytics from $20 a year-billed month, on a Starter card that says "Manage up to 10 brands" while the footer prices five brands at $20. Trends MCP is the trend-data row, not a queue: Cursor setup needs https://api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp plus transport: "http" and a Bearer key on llms.txt, while homepage copy-config omits both.
Which Buffer alternative actually fits the job?
Pick by the job, not by a single "best overall" row. Buffer is the per-channel scheduler with a public MCP on Free. Later is the visual planner that sells Social Sets. Publer is the low floor for extra accounts. Metricool is analytics plus publishing, billed by brand count. Trends MCP answers demand across search, social, commerce, and live boards. It does not draft a LinkedIn post or refill a queue.
A buyer leaving Buffer for "more features" often wants inbox depth, a visual grid, cheaper extra profiles, or trend research. Those are four different purchases. The table below is the short map. Dollars were read from vendor pages on 8 Oct 2026.
| Tool | What it wins | Public floor (8 Oct 2026) | Agent surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer | Per-channel MCP publisher, including Free | $0 for 3 channels; Essentials $5/mo yearly per channel ($6 monthly) | Hosted MCP https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp on every plan |
| Later | Instagram Social Set + visual planner | Yearly cards $18.75 / $37.50 / $82.50; Free omitted on the pricing page | No Social publish MCP. Influence Reporting API is JWT, server-side, GET /v2/instances limit=50 |
| Publer | $5 one-account Professional floor | Help 15h4yqh: Professional from $5, Business from $10 | MCP help 14orlq0 opening: Business and Enterprise. Same article keep-in-mind: Top Ambassadors on Enterprise |
| Metricool | Brand analytics plus a hosted MCP | USD annual Starter from $20 (5 brands) / $36 (10) | Hosted https://ai.metricool.com/mcp. Claude page: Over 20 tools. REST stays Advanced or Custom |
| Trends MCP | Live multi-source trend data for agents | Free 100 requests; Starter $19 / 1,000; Pro $49 / 5,000; Business $199 / 25,000 | Two hosts: api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp (Bearer) and www OAuth for Claude.ai only |
Buffer is first in that table because the query is Buffer alternatives, and Buffer still owns the public publish MCP. Trends MCP is last on purpose. Crowning it for scheduling would be false.
How much does Buffer charge per connected channel?
Buffer bills per channel, not per brand. Yearly cards on buffer.com/pricing (accessed 8 Oct 2026) print Essentials at $5 a month per channel ($60 billed yearly, labeled save 2 months) and Team at $10 ($120 billed yearly, same 2-month label). Free is $0 with up to 3 channels. The markdown twin buffer.com/pricing.md still lists monthly Essentials from $6 per channel and Team from $12, with volume steps 1-10 / 11-25 / 26-50 / 51+ at $6/$4/$3/$1 on Essentials and $12/$4/$3/$2 on Team. Example totals there: 10 channels Essentials $60 monthly / $50 yearly; 50 channels $195 / $163.
The same FAQ still says annual billing is a 20% discount. $6 to $5 is two months free (16.67%), not 20%. $12 to $10 is the same math. Do not flatten the FAQ line with the card label. Prices last updated November 2025, per that FAQ.
Free includes 10 scheduled posts per channel that refill after publish, 1 user, 1 API key, 3,000 requests per 30 days. Essentials: 1 user, 3 keys, 7,500 / 30 days. Team: unlimited users, 5 keys, 15,000 / 30 days. Shared 15-minute cap is 100 on every plan. 24-hour caps are 250 / 250 / 500. Paid scheduling is called unlimited and then capped at 5,000 posts per channel under fair use.
First-comment copy fights itself on the same site. The HTML feature row says Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn. The Essentials and Team bullets in pricing.md say Instagram or LinkedIn. The logo row on the HTML pricing page includes Substack; the supported-channels table in pricing.md does not list Substack. Confirm the network before treating it as a billed channel.
A 10-channel yearly Essentials bill at $50 is the number to hold against Later Growth at $37.50 (2 Sets / 16 profiles) and Publer Professional at five accounts ($20 on the JS 3+ rate of $4). Buffer gets cheaper per channel as the stack grows. It never becomes a Social Set.
Later Social Sets vs Buffer channels: who covers X?
Later does not replace Buffer for X. A Social Set on later.com/pricing (8 Oct 2026) is one of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, and Snapchat. That is eight profiles. X is not in the Set. Buffer's pricing.md channel table includes X / Twitter free and premium profiles.
Yearly cards still print Starter $18.75, Growth $37.50, Scale $82.50. The banner still says 3 months free | 25% off. The FAQ still says save 25% annual. Extra users in that FAQ are $5, and Starter stays limited to 1 user. Free is still omitted from the pricing page.
Auto Publish FAQ includes YouTube and Snapchat. Posts count when scheduled, not when published, per profile rather than per Set. Starter is 30 posts per profile, Growth 180, Scale unlimited.
Later has no public Social publish MCP. The Influence Reporting API at docs.reporting.api.later.com (accessed 8 Oct 2026) mints a JWT from POST https://reporting.api.later.com/oauth/token with account-team clientId / clientSecret, then lists instances with GET /v2/instances and limit=50. That guide says server-side only. It is a reporting pipe, not a Buffer-style create_post.
Choose Later when the calendar is Instagram-first and the Set's eight networks are enough. Stay on Buffer when X, Bluesky, Mastodon, or Google Business Profile have to sit in the same queue as Instagram.
Publer's $5 floor vs Buffer Essentials at one channel
Publer undercuts one-channel Buffer. Help article 15h4yqh (updated 15 Sep 2026, re-fetched 8 Oct 2026 at https://publer.com/help/en/article/15h4yqh) still prints Professional from $5/month for 1 social account, 1 user, 0 additional members, with a 7-day trial. Business starts at $10 with a 14-day trial. Yearly is a 20% discount versus monthly. Every 9 social accounts or additional members, the 10th is free.
The plans JS still served as plans-332f215a99c630a3.js does not add $4 extras on top of a $5 base. It replaces the unit rate: 1 Professional account is $5, 2 are $4.50 each, 3+ use the visitor-API rate of $4 (Business: $10 / $8.50 / $7). GET https://app.publer.com/api/v1/billing/subscription?visitor=true on 8 Oct 2026 still returns professional.accounts: 4 / members: 2 and business.accounts: 7 / members: 3. Worked monthly Professional: 3 accounts $12, 5 accounts $20, 10 accounts $36 after tenth-free. A $5-plus-$4-extra reading would price 3 accounts at $13. That is the wrong formula.
Yearly math still fights itself. Help 15h4yqh says 20%. The JS 12-month key is 0.20, or 0.25 when an additional_yearly_discount cookie is set. Help hshrth (updated 17 Sep 2026) still adds a bonus line of 16%. The same JS object uses .17 for the 6-month key. Do not flatten 20%, two months free, 0.20, 0.25, 16%, and .17 into one discount.
MCP access is the other split. Buffer's MCP is on Free. Publer help 14orlq0 now opens with Business and Enterprise, then the keep-in-mind block still restricts access to Top Ambassadors on the Enterprise plan. The pricing grid still links that article. There is no public MCP URL; Settings then AI & Automations generates one after an API key. Buffer's Cursor guide does not need a key.
Metricool brand counts vs Buffer's per-channel bill
Metricool bills by brand, not by channel. USD annual cards on metricool.com/pricing (8 Oct 2026) still print Starter from $20 / $36 and Advanced from $53 / $85 / $159. Footers match 5 / 10 brands on Starter and 15 / 25 / 50 on Advanced. The Starter feature list on the same page still says "Manage up to 10 brands" next to a footer that prices five brands at $20. That 10-versus-5 line is still live. Annual is labeled save up to 24%; $210 to $159 on 50-brand Advanced is about 24%, while $25 to $20 on 5-brand Starter is 20%.
Hosted MCP at https://ai.metricool.com/mcp is the analytics cousin of Buffer's publisher MCP. The Claude page still says Over 20 tools and names Cursor among clients. REST with X-Mc-Auth stays Advanced or Custom. Buffer MCP writes to the queue on Free. Metricool MCP on Free still sits inside Free limits (1 brand, 20 published posts, 30 days of analytics on the Claude plan cards).
Trends MCP is closer to Metricool's measurement job than to Buffer's queue, and still not a replacement for either. Google Trends in Cursor is a read of search demand. Buffer create_post is a write to a channel. A social team that wants both usually keeps a publisher and adds a trend API, rather than swapping one for the other. The social media trends API page is the Trends MCP side of that split.
Which of these tools can an AI agent actually call?
Buffer is the only publisher in this set with a documented public MCP URL on Free. Cursor setup on developers.buffer.com/guides/integrations/cursor.html (accessed 8 Oct 2026) is OAuth JSON with no transport key and no API key:
{
"mcpServers": {
"buffer": {
"url": "https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp"
}
}
}
The generic path on developers.buffer.com/guides/integrations/mcp.md uses the same URL plus Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. That doc names 20 tools, including create_post. List tools page with first default 20, max 100. create_post mode values are addToQueue (default), shareNow, shareNext, and customScheduled. The security section on the same page says create_post can publish immediately. Buffer's marketing MCP FAQ still says the human is always the last step and that assistant-created posts land as drafts or scheduled posts. Those two sentences do not agree. shareNow is the durable one to test before letting an agent post unattended.
Trends MCP uses two hosts that are not interchangeable. llms.txt (Last updated 2026-10-08) Cursor JSON is:
"trends-mcp": {
"url": "https://api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp",
"transport": "http",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
Homepage and /data-sources copy-config on 8 Oct 2026 omit transport and the Bearer prefix, sending Authorization: YOUR_API_KEY only. Claude.ai Connectors use the www host /mcp path with OAuth and no key. Do not "correct" that www host to api.
Metering also splits. HTML /pricing FAQ: one successful API or MCP call equals one request. llms.txt: MCP get_top_trends costs 1 credit per 10 requested rows, max 10 credits per call; REST is 1 request per call. get_top_trends default limit is 25, max 200. Free boards return the top 10. Source counts on the same day still do not collapse: pricing heading 30+, pricing FAQ 40+, homepage hero 35+ and FAQ 40+, /data-sources H2 "36 sources" then "Fifteen keyword sources and twenty-one live" then Keyword sources 16 / Live feeds 24 then "83 data sources". llms.txt lists 16 keyword sources including python and 24 live feed names. Paid monthly is $19 / $49 / $199. HTML yearly cards print $16 / $39 / $159 billed $192 / $468 / $1,910. Markdown says annual saves 20%. $19 × 0.8 is $15.20, not $16. $192 is not 20% off $228 ($182.40). Trial FAQ charges on day 8; yearly cards say after day 7. Full SKU math for Buffer lives on the Buffer pricing post.
Publer REST remains Business and Enterprise. Overview getting-started curl still hits /api/v1/me with Authorization: Bearer. users.md still documents GET /api/v1/users/me with Bearer-API. https://publer.com/docs/authentication still 404s; the live path is under /docs/getting-started/. Rate limit remains 100 requests / 2-minute window, 429 Rate limit exceeded. Retry later.
Later's agent story is the Reporting API above, not a publish MCP. Metricool's hosted MCP is real and Free-eligible, with plan caps still applied.
FAQ
Is there a cheaper Buffer alternative for one or two channels? Publer Professional at $5 for one account undercuts yearly Buffer Essentials at $5 per channel when the buyer only needs one profile, and the JS 5-account Professional total is $20 versus Buffer's $25 yearly / $30 monthly for five channels. Buffer Free (3 channels, 10 refillable scheduled posts) is still the $0 floor. Later's cheapest yearly card is $18.75 and omits Free on the pricing page.
Can Buffer's MCP publish a post without a human clicking send? The MCP create_post tool accepts mode: shareNow, and the developer security notes say that call can publish immediately. The marketing MCP FAQ still describes drafts or scheduled posts with a human last step. Treat shareNow as live until Buffer removes it, and keep client approval prompts on.
Is Trends MCP a Buffer alternative? Only for the research half of the job. Trends MCP returns keyword growth and live boards through MCP plus REST. It does not connect Instagram or refill a queue. Buffer, Later, Publer, and Metricool publish. A team that wants both keeps a scheduler and adds Trends MCP for demand.
Does Later schedule X the way Buffer does? No. A Later Social Set is Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, and Snapchat. Buffer's supported-channels table includes X. Buyers leaving Buffer because they post on X should not treat Later as a drop-in.
Why do Buffer's yearly prices not match the 20% FAQ? Cards and pricing.md examples save two months ($6→$5, $12→$10). The billing FAQ still says 20%. Two months free is 16.67%. Quote both and check the toggle on buffer.com/pricing before budgeting a 20% line.
