Pick a Reddit MCP by job, not by tool count. Trends MCP wins live Reddit Hot Posts and Reddit World News boards plus subscriber growth on source reddit, using the same Cursor HTTP config as Google and TikTok. Dialog's reddit-research-mcp wins hosted semantic research across a 20,000+ subreddit index with no Reddit app of your own. Manifold wins hosted post and comment search on a credit meter: 250 free credits once, then Pro from $20 a month for 2,500 credits. Composio wins hosted posting through managed OAuth (29 tools; Hobby $0 with 100,000 calls). jordanburke/reddit-mcp-server wins local posting if OAuth credentials already exist: 10 read tools and 8 write tools. eliasbiondo's server wins keyless local search with 6 tools.

Which Reddit MCP server should you pick?

The right buy depends on whether the agent needs a ranked front page, a cited thread, or a post published under a human account. Reddit does not ship an official MCP server (Manifold checked October 2026). Every option below is community-built or hosted by a third party.

Trends MCP sits in the first row only for ranked boards and multi-source growth. A research brief that needs verbatim comments should start with Dialog or Manifold. An agent that must publish as a person should start with Composio (hosted) or jordanburke (local).

Trends MCP is a trend feed, not a Reddit client. get_top_trends takes type Reddit Hot Posts or Reddit World News with no keyword. get_growth and get_time_series take source reddit and a subreddit name with no r/ prefix; that series is subscriber volume, not post search. Pair a hot title with Google Search or YouTube growth on the Reddit Hot Posts API page, then measure the community itself on Reddit trends.

Durable limits from llms.txt (Last updated 2026-10-14): get_top_trends default limit is 25, max 200. Free boards return the top 10 only. offset is pinned at 0 on Free; pagination is paid. Country codes apply to Google Trends, YouTube Trending, TikTok hashtag boards, and X (Twitter) Trending, not to the two Reddit feeds. MCP get_top_trends costs 1 credit per 10 requested rows (max 10 credits per call). REST is 1 request per call. The HTML pricing FAQ still says one successful API or MCP call equals one request. Failed calls are free on both documents.

Cursor config from that same llms.txt file (paste into ~/.cursor/mcp.json or the MCP server for Cursor setup):

"trends-mcp": {
  "url": "https://api.trendsmcp.ai/mcp",
  "transport": "http",
  "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}

The homepage copy-config on 14 Oct 2026 omitted transport and the Bearer prefix (Authorization was the bare key). Claude.ai Connectors use OAuth against the www host /mcp path, not the api host. Two MCP hosts, not interchangeable.

The same llms.txt file lists 16 keyword sources including python and 24 live feed names, keeping the four category boards (Google Trends by Category, TikTok Trending Hashtags by Category, Amazon Best Sellers by Category, Substack by Category). The homepage live-feed table printed 20 rows and dropped those four, while the homepage playground dropdown still listed them. Pricing HTML used a 30+ heading. The pricing FAQ and the homepage FAQ both said 40+. The homepage hero said 35+. Do not flatten those counts.

Do you still need a Reddit API app?

For a hosted research server, usually no. For a local server that searches or posts, usually yes, and new apps now need Reddit's approval.

Reddit's Responsible Builder Policy (updated 5 Oct 2026) states that approval is required before accessing any Reddit data through the API, that commercial use needs express written approval, and that apps must not spam identical or similar content across subreddits. jordanburke's README and Manifold's 9 Oct 2026 roundup both date the close of self-service app creation to November 2025. Existing client IDs obtained before that close still work on jordanburke at 60-100 requests per minute.

That policy is why the remaining "Create App" instructions are a mess. reddit-mcp-buddy's README still walks through reddit.com/prefs/apps, picks a script app, and claims 100 requests per minute with username plus password. Gumloop's connector JSON-LD HowTo says "No code or API keys required," while the FAQ on the same page says yes, create an app at prefs/apps and paste the client ID and secret. Composio's Reddit toolkit FAQ says the opposite of Gumloop's FAQ: no developer credentials; Composio runs a managed OAuth app, and an optional own app is only for white-labeling the consent screen.

Dialog and Manifold never ask for a Reddit app. Dialog's README (version 1.0.1) points Cursor at https://mcp.dialog.tools/mcp. A GET to that URL returned HTTP 401 on 14 Oct 2026 (alive, auth required). Older listings still print https://reddit-research-mcp.fastmcp.app/mcp; a GET there returned HTTP 405. Prefer the URL in the current README.

Who wins hosted search versus hosted posting?

Dialog wins pure Reddit research that has to cite posts. The README documents semantic vector search across 20,000+ indexed subreddits (2k+ members, updated weekly), five Reddit operations (discover, search, fetch_posts, fetch_multiple, fetch_comments), and five feed operations for saved monitoring. The MCP surface is three tools (discover_operations, get_operation_schema, execute_operation). Setup copy fights itself: "No terminal commands" sits above Claude Code HTTP add snippets. The MCP is free; Dialog the product is the scheduled-agent layer with 45+ other integrations.

Manifold wins "search posts and comments, then list every new post in a window" without a Reddit login. Seven tools: reddit_search_posts, reddit_search_comments, reddit_search_subreddits, reddit_get_subreddit, reddit_get_new_posts, reddit_get_post, reddit_get_comments. Each search tool starts at 1 credit. Plans (accessed 14 Oct 2026): 250 free credits once, Pro $20 for 2,500 credits a month, then $40 / 5,500, $80 / 12,000, $150 / 24,000. Max starts at $250 for 42,000. Top-ups on Pro and Max are $10 to $500 at 100 credits a dollar and never expire. Concurrency is 5 in-flight calls per provider family. Manifold does not post.

Composio wins hosted write. The toolkit page (JSON-LD dateModified 2026-10-12, softwareVersion 20261012) lists 29 tools, including create/delete/edit for posts and comments, vote, moderation queues, flairs, media upload, and username checks. Hobby is $0 with 100,000 tool calls a month and 50,000 triggers; up to 20,000 of those calls can run through Composio-managed apps such as Reddit, then $0.0005 per managed-app call. Pro is $29 a month with a $29 usage credit that does not roll over. Writes run as the connected Reddit user. Keep an approval step in the prompt.

Gumloop is the other hosted writer, and only for text. Connector JSON-LD (14 Oct 2026) prices Pro from $37 a month after a 14-day trial, says the agent can create/edit/delete text posts and comments, and says it cannot vote, moderate, set flair, send direct messages, or submit link, image, video, or poll posts. Treat the HowTo "no API keys" line as stale next to the FAQ that still sends operators to prefs/apps.

BigIdeasDB's 5 Aug 2026 market-research roundup skipped Trends MCP, Manifold, eliasbiondo, and Composio's 29-tool count. It also counted jordanburke at 10 read + 6 write. The current jordanburke README lists 8 write tools (create_post, reply_to_post, edit_post, edit_comment, save_content, unsave_content, delete_post, delete_comment). Manifold's 9 Oct 2026 roundup skipped Trends MCP, Dialog, and Gumloop's $37 JSON-LD offer.

Which local servers still work without keys?

eliasbiondo/reddit-mcp-server is the cleanest no-key local option. Six tools: search, search_subreddit, get_post, get_subreddit_posts, get_user, get_user_posts. Cursor JSON is uvx with args ["reddit-no-auth-mcp-server"]. No Reddit credentials in the README. It lists no write tools. Datacenter IPs that Reddit blocks will still fail; that is an operations problem, not a missing env var.

reddit-mcp-buddy is MIT, five tools (browse_subreddit, search_reddit, get_post_details, user_analysis, reddit_explain). With no credentials only browse_subreddit and the offline reddit_explain work; browse is RSS, so score, num_comments, upvote_ratio, and nsfw come back null. Documented rate tiers: anonymous 10 req/min server-side (RSS often one uncached request per 25-60 seconds), app-only 60, authenticated 100. It never posts.

jordanburke/reddit-mcp-server is the local writer. Ten read tools include search_reddit, get_trending_subreddits, and get_post_comments. Safe mode defaults to standard (2 second write delay, last 10 items plus cross-sub duplicate checks). strict is 5 seconds and last 20 items. Bot disclosure defaults to off. Voting and private messages are omitted on purpose. Without credentials, auto falls back to RSS for browse_subreddit and get_top_posts only, about 1 request per minute, up to 25 posts, with scores and comment counts at 0. Writing needs REDDIT_USERNAME and REDDIT_PASSWORD on top of the client ID and secret. Password grant in a desktop config file is the security cost of that job.

A local stdio server runs in Cursor and Claude Desktop on that machine. It does not show up in Claude on the web or in ChatGPT unless someone hosts it. The TikTok MCP roundup on this blog follows the same hosted-versus-local split for a different network: best TikTok MCP servers.

FAQ

Is there an official Reddit MCP server?

No. Manifold's roundup (updated 9 Oct 2026) checked and found none. The choices are open-source processes you run, or hosted URLs from Dialog, Manifold, Composio, Gumloop, and Trends MCP.

Can Trends MCP search Reddit comments or post a reply?

No. Trends MCP returns ranked Reddit Hot Posts and Reddit World News rows, plus subscriber growth for a subreddit name on source reddit. Comment trees, user analysis, and writes live on Dialog, Manifold, Composio, jordanburke, eliasbiondo, or reddit-mcp-buddy.

Which Reddit MCP should a Cursor user add first?

If the job is "what is hot on Reddit, and is that topic growing on Google," add Trends MCP with the llms.txt JSON (url, transport: "http", Authorization: Bearer …). If the job is "cite threads in these subreddits," add Dialog at https://mcp.dialog.tools/mcp or Manifold at https://mcp.manifoldmcp.com/mcp. If the job is "publish this draft," add Composio or jordanburke, not Trends MCP.

Do hosted Reddit MCP servers need a Reddit developer app?

Dialog and Manifold say no. Composio says no for the managed OAuth app (optional own app for a branded consent screen). Gumloop's FAQ says yes, create an app at prefs/apps, which contradicts the HowTo on the same connector page. Local search and posting servers still expect client IDs that Reddit now approves case by case.

How much does a Reddit board cost on Trends MCP?

Free is 100 requests a month and top 10 rows. Starter is $19 for 1,000 requests, Pro $49 for 5,000, Business $199 for 25,000, with annual billing saving 20% in pricing.md (Last updated 2026-10-14). MCP board pulls bill 1 credit per 10 requested rows, while the HTML FAQ still bills one successful call as one request, so quote a monthly budget from the meter the client actually uses.
